Remembering Kaji Kalu Pandey: Who Was He?
Kaji Kalu Pandey, originally named Bamshidhar Pandey, earned his famous alias from King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who affectionately called him “Eh Kalu.”
Born to Kaji Bhimraj Pandey, Kalu Pandey was a trusted advisor, military strategist, and commander in the Gorkha kingdom.
Serving as the Chief of the Nepalese Army from 1746 until his death in 1757, he played a pivotal role in Nepal’s unification.
Under his leadership, the Gorkha army captured Nuwakot, which later helped Gorkha capture the Kathmandu Valley. He also led successful campaigns in Belkot, Naldhum, Tadhi, and Sirhanchowk.
