Way to Bojinee Dam Explained

We’ve all been to Nagarkot, haven’t we? Whether it’s for a night out or just a picnic, it’s one of the most-visited destinations for Kathmandu residents.

But I bet only a minority have visited this hidden gem nearby. It’s just 3.5 km away from Nagarkot Geodetic View Tower.

Even the road condition is excellent. Only the final five-minute stretch is unpaved.

Let me show you the route to Bojinee Dam:

  • Start from Bouddha > Jorpati > Gokarna, and head towards Sankhu.
  • Continue towards Sali Nadi and keep following the road to reach Kattike.
  • A few more minutes of the ride, and you’ll reach Nagarkot.
  • Once you reach the roundabout, take a sharp left and head towards the Nagarkot Geodetic View Tower.
  • Continue on the Bageshwori–Nagarkot road, and you’ll reach Bojinee Dam within the next 5 to 10 minutes.

Of course, you can use Google Maps for navigation. But make sure to set the correct location, as the app sometimes shows you an alternate route via Koteshwor–Sallaghari–Nagarkot.

In case you’re from Bhaktapur or nearby areas, using that path can be shorter for you.

For others, it’s best to follow the Sankhu–Nagarkot route, as most of the sections are paved, offering a smooth and pleasant riding experience.

What to Do When You’re in Bojinee Dam?

Just to be clear: This is me, not Shah Rukh Khan :p

The hidden lake of Nagarkot, Bojinee Dam, is a man-made reservoir that was historically used for irrigation purposes. It doesn’t hold much sacred significance; just a normal pond.

That’s also one of the reasons many of us were unaware of this green-colored pond. What makes it worth visiting is the serene and peaceful atmosphere it offers.

There are benches all around the pond, so you can sit with your loved ones or even friends and talk for hours. Seriously, it’s one of the best hangout spots in the Bhaktapur district.

Not to forget, you can take a walk around the pond along the lovely trail. In fact, you can even take the uphill trail to explore the forest area in-depth.

There’s also an open ground a little farther from the dam itself, making it a perfect picnic spot too. So, if you can bring some dry snacks, this place definitely won’t disappoint you!

Nearby Attractions

When you’re in Nagarkot, there’s so much more to explore beyond Bojinee Dam. There are countless locations worth visiting, and honestly, I might miss a few here. So I’ll probably keep updating this in the future.

But for now, here are some places I’ve personally been to. I’ll also come up with a dedicated Nagarkot itinerary article soon to help you even better. Until then, here’s a quick list:

  • Kattike Bhanjyang: Located along the Sankhu–Nagarkot road, it’s a nice place to stop and relax. There’s a grassy open space where you can lie down and soak up the sun (especially recommended during the winter season).

  • Nagarkot Geodetic View Tower: If you’re in Nagarkot during the morning hours, the mountain views from here are simply surreal. A must-visit spot.

  • Ratnachundeshwor Mahadev Pokhari & Temple: Just about 50 meters ahead of the view tower, you’ll find the entrance to this spot. It’s a great place for Mahadev devotees, featuring a man-made holy pond, Shiv Ling Park, and the main temple itself.

  • Buddha Peace Park: A peaceful park featuring a Buddha statue and ample space to roam around or spend quiet moments with loved ones. Try exploring the whole area. It’s actually much larger than it seems at first glance.

  • Rani Jhula: Quite popular on social media, but to be honest, it’s just a suspension bridge. Nothing much to see, but worth a quick stop if you’re nearby.

  • Nearby Waterfalls: Just a short distance from Rani Jhula, you’ll find several hidden waterfalls like Muhan Pokhari, Nagarkot Waterfall, and Tudi Jharana.

  • Sallaghari Picnic Spot: Another great picnic destination in Nagarkot. The main highlight is the lineup of beautiful pine trees, which create a serene atmosphere instantly.

  • Shree Pancha Mahalaxmi Temple: Located in Changunarayan, this temple hasn’t received the attention it truly deserves. But honestly, it’s one of the most beautifully designed temples I’ve visited.

There’s also a small cave right in front of the temple. You can visit this place during your return. Just take the Telkot–Changunarayan road, which connects to Sankhu a little ahead.

Expected Budget for the Trip

The budget for your trip to Bojinee Dam really depends on a few things. Mainly, whether you’re planning a day trip or an overnight stay, and how much comfort or luxury you’re going for.

If it’s just a quick getaway, your main expenses will be fuel and some snacks. You can easily manage the whole trip for around Rs. 500 to 1000 per person.

For light snacks and cold drinks, you can find vendor carts around the area.

But if you’re planning a night out in Nagarkot, the budget can vary depending on your preferences—from budget-friendly lodges to high-end resorts. It’s totally up to you!
