Let’s first understand why the temple got its name ‘Latarambeshwor Mahdev’. The simplest answer would be–it’s a Lord Shiva temple.

However, according to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was carrying the dead body of his first wife, Devi Sati, his matted hair fell here.

It’s also believed that Lord Shiva taught his sacred ‘Tandav’ dance to Rishi Tandu at this exact spot. Later, this dance form became renowned in the ‘Nritya Loka’.

So, you see, if you’re a huge devotee of Lord Shiva, I highly recommend visiting this place at least once.

How to Reach Latarambeshwor Mahadev Temple?

If you’re based in Kathmandu Valley or anywhere near the Makwanpur district, this can be a perfect 1-day trip.

While you could take a public bus via the Kanti Highway, it’s not the most convenient option.

This approach requires getting off at Baguwa and hiking all the way from the base—a 4-5 hour trek.

If you have a private vehicle (especially a two-wheeler), you can drive directly to the parking spot at the start of the hiking trail.

For groups, hiring a public four-wheeler jeep or van is also a good option, but you’ll need to start your hike slightly lower.

We traveled by motorcycle, and it took about 2.5 hours to reach the parking spot. Here’s the route we followed (get help from Google Maps for detailed navigation):

Lalitpur Satdobato > Tikabhairav > Kot Danda > Bhattedanda > Kalche > Baguwa

From Baguwa, you’ll find large boards on the right directing you to change direction. From here, you’ll be accompanied by other boards all the way to the parking zone.

The hike from here takes around 1.5 hours, or 2-2.5 hours if you’re not used to walking.

Road Condition to Latarambeshwor Mahadev

The Kanti Highway has narrow roads, mostly paved but damaged in some areas due to FREQUENT LANDSLIDES!

You see…During the monsoon, traveling here can be risky, so make sure to check the road conditions before heading out.

Once you take a sharp right turn, the real off-road adventure begins—a 30-minute ride on unpaved roads. Ride carefully!

You can’t take your vehicle to the top since the hiking trail starts from the parking spot itself.

And speaking about the trail, it’s mostly uphill with staircases, including the iconic stairs at the end.

What to Do in Latarambeshwor Mahadev

Don’t just visit for the staircase! The massive ‘Trishul’ is another striking feature and a great spot for photos.

We found this photogenic spot. Make sure to tag us in your stories if you take any pictures here!

At the top, you’ll find the main temple. Perform rituals, apply tika, and thank Lord Shiva for everything.

It’s said you should never ask for anything from Lord Shiva—there are reasons behind this. Let me know if you’d like a separate article on this topic!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t apply tika or perform pooja this time, as my grandfather passed away earlier this year. So, I focused on capturing photos and videos instead.

1-Night Trip to Latarambeshwor Mahadev?

Spending a night in Ipa Panchakanya, Makwanpur, is indeed possible if you plan to worship Mahadev early in the morning.

There are a few homestays in the area, though limited—we found about 2-3 during our visit.

Expected Budget

Major expense: petrol!

As with most short trips, fuel for the motorcycle was our primary expense.

Additional costs included snacks, tea, and juice. Carrying a water bottle from home should suffice, but you can also buy one near the temple for Rs. 50.

This price is reasonable, considering locals climb the stairs to sell these items—support them in the simplest way you can!

Overall, expect to spend Rs. 500 to 1000 for a day trip. If you stay overnight, the cost may double or triple, depending on accommodations and meals.

Final Words

Excited for your trip to Latarambeshwor Mahadev? I’m sure you’ll find it worthwhile.

We had initially planned to visit some additional spots, but time constraints didn’t allow it.

If you have an extra day or complete your trip quickly, consider visiting Makwanpur Gadi and Lele’s PIA Park.

Maybe that will be my next trip—and your next guide!

Until then, have a safe ride and happy travels to Makwanpur!
